Nail Surgery – Patient Information 


 

1. Introduction

This document provides important information about your upcoming nail surgery procedure. Please read it carefully and ask any questions.


2. What is Nail Surgery?

Nail surgery is a minor procedure used to treat painful or infected nails, most commonly ingrown toenails. The procedure may involve removing part or all of the nail, and sometimes applying a chemical to prevent regrowth.


3. The Procedure

  • A local anaesthetic will be injected to numb the toe
  • Part or all of the nail will be removed
  • A chemical (if required) may be applied to prevent regrowth
  • The toe will be dressed with a sterile bandage

The procedure usually takes 30–60 minutes.


4. Benefits

  • Relief from pain and discomfort
  • Reduced risk of ongoing infection
  • Prevention of recurrence (in most cases)

5. Risks and Possible Complications

While nail surgery is generally safe, the following risks may occur:

  • Infection
  • Bleeding
  • Pain or discomfort after the procedure
  • Delayed healing
  • Allergic reaction to anaesthetic or dressings
  • Regrowth of the nail or recurrence of the problem

6. Post-Operative Care (Aftercare)

Following your procedure, it is important to follow these instructions carefully:

First 24 Hours 

  • Keep your foot elevated as much as possible
  • Keep the dressing clean and dry
  • Avoid unnecessary walking or standing
  • Minor bleeding is normal; if excessive, add more sterile gause on top of the existing dressing or contact the clinic via info@healthyheel.com
  • No driving

After 1st post operative appointment, it is free of charge( all other follow up appointments are charge at a standard podiatry appointment)

  • Begin dressing changes as instructed by your clinician
  • Bathe the toe daily in warm salty water (if advised)
  • Use Clinicept
  • Dry thoroughly and apply a clean dressing , no rubbing
  • Continue to keep the area clean and protected

General Care:

  • Avoid strenuous activity until healing progresses
  • Do not pick or interfere with the wound
  • Take pain relief as advised
  • Complete any prescribed medication course

Signs of Infection (seek advice if present):

  • Increased redness, swelling, or heat
  • Pus or discharge
  • Increasing pain
  • Unpleasant odour

7. Footwear Advice

Proper footwear is essential to support healing and prevent complications:

  • Bring a open toe footwear to your surgery appointment.
  • Wear open-toed sandals or loose-fitting shoes for the first few days
  • Avoid tight, narrow, or high-heeled shoes
  • Choose breathable footwear with a wide toe box
  • Ensure there is no pressure on the treated toe
  • Gradually return to normal footwear as healing improves

If in doubt, bring your shoes to your follow-up appointment for advice.


8. Healing Time

  • Initial healing usually takes 2–4 weeks
  • Full healing may take up to 6–8 weeks

Healing time may vary depending on your health and circulation.


9. When to Seek Help

Contact the clinic if you experience:

  • Increasing pain not relieved by medication
  • Excessive bleeding
  • Signs of infection
  • Any concerns about healing
